Used Car Maintenance: A Simple Schedule to Avoid Costly Repairs

The single biggest factor in how long a used car lasts isn't luck — it's consistent, basic maintenance. Here's a realistic schedule that doesn't require you to become a mechanic.

Every month

Check tire pressure (including the spare) and glance at fluid levels — oil, coolant, washer fluid. This takes five minutes and catches small issues early.

Every 3,000–7,500 miles

Oil changes, depending on your specific vehicle and oil type (check your owner's manual — modern synthetic oils often stretch this interval further than older conventional oil guidance). Have tires rotated at the same time to promote even wear.

Every 12,000–15,000 miles (roughly annual for average drivers)

Brake inspection, air filter replacement, and a broader fluid check including transmission and brake fluid. This is also a good time for a general inspection similar to what we do during our 150-point pre-sale inspection.

Every 30,000–60,000 miles

Spark plugs, timing belt (if applicable to your engine — not all modern engines use one), and a deeper transmission service. Consult your owner's manual, since intervals vary significantly by manufacturer.

Watch for warning signs between scheduled service

Unusual noises, dashboard warning lights, fluid spots under the car, or changes in how the car handles are all worth addressing right away rather than waiting for the next scheduled service. The NHTSA also maintains a recall lookup tool worth checking periodically by VIN.

Keeping up with this schedule is one of the best ways to protect the investment you made when you bought your vehicle. If you're not sure what a specific noise or warning light means, our team is happy to point you toward next steps — reach out anytime.
